Panthera became a registered international non-governmental organisation in Tanzania in 2025. The organization’s operations are focused on the western Tanzania conservation landscape, where we will provide financial, logistical, and technical protection help to local partners, as well as support for wildlife monitoring initiatives. The Tanzania Wildlife Authority (TAWA) and other pertinent partners will receive assistance from the Data & Technology Technician in the deployment, administration, and utilisation of SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) for law enforcement surveillance in western Tanzania. Supporting data gathering methods, managing data flows, controlling and cleaning data quality, producing frequent reports, and resolving technological problems are all included in this.
Where Will You Work:
Based in Tabora, the role involves regular travel to TAWA offices throughout the region, as well as sporadic trips to Protected Areas and maybe to Arusha, Morogoro, and Dar es Salaam. If necessary, occasional overseas travel may be anticipated. In addition to having a strong interest in data management and applied technologies in conservation contexts, candidates should have a background in ecology, conservation, or a similar subject.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist TAWA with the analysis and visualisation of SMART data to aid in site-level decision-making, as well as the creation of SMART reports and maps that emphasise patrol effort, threat detection, and other important indicators.
- Contribute to donor reporting, especially with regard to conservation and law enforcement outputs.
- Help TAWA and its partners implement, maintain, and debug other conservation technology, such as control room apps and EarthRanger (or comparable)
- Assist TAWA and its partners with the implementation and administration of SMART, including gathering, cleaning, verifying, and standardising data from SMART patrols and other pertinent datasets (such as ecological monitoring and human-wildlife conflict).
- Support the testing and deployment of new SMART features or updates as needed, and maintain and update data management protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for SMART use.
- By encouraging protocol adherence, controlling data flows from the field to the database, and keeping well-organised, organised data catalogues, you may help TAWA and its partners ensure the quality of their data.
- To guarantee correct and timely data entry from field patrols, collaborate closely with TAWA SMART focal points. This includes participating in operational planning and debrief meetings where SMART outcomes are showcased.
- By creating SOPs, collaborating with TAWA to guarantee compliance, and offering input to enhance system use, you can assist TAWA and its partners in the implementation, upkeep, and troubleshooting of other conservation technologies, such as EarthRanger (or comparable) and control room applications, GPS units, satellite communicators, and other pertinent tools.
- As needed, offer partners follow-up support, help, and mentoring on all of the aforementioned technologies, including by holding pertinent training sessions.
- Help create user manuals, SOPs, and training materials for field and office-based employees.
- Help with the budgeting, inventory control, and purchasing procedures for hardware, software, and data systems associated to technology.
- As needed, take part in more general Panthera activities, such as workshops, field operations support, and animal monitoring help.
- Keep thorough monthly financial records and notify Panthera employees in Tanzania and abroad of all expenses.
Job Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
- A bachelor’s degree in ecology, conservation biology, wildlife management, natural resources management, or a similar discipline is necessary; a postgraduate degree is desirable.
- Working knowledge of EarthRanger, SMART, or other conservation data management systems is preferred.
- Shown aptitude for organising, cleaning, analysing, and interpreting huge datasets.
- Experience using data gathered in the field to create dashboards, maps, or summary reports.
- Good Excel abilities and a high degree of computer literacy; knowledge of GIS software is advantageous.
- Strong ability and enthusiasm in technology, as well as a readiness to pick up new skills and platforms.
- The capacity to instruct people on data management procedures and tools.
- Proficiency in field operations within Protected Areas, including the capacity to travel and work for lengthy periods of time in distant regions.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities, as well as a track record of cooperating with government partners.
- A current driver’s license.
